Taking care of your OTC vegan candle.

We want you to be able to use your candle safely. Follow these simple steps to ensure a safe and long experience.

On the first burns memory ring.

The first burn on your candle is the most important! Every candle has a memory ring.. The memory ring of a candle is the indent made by the wax on its initial lighting and marks the edge for where all future burns will reach.

OTC vegan candle first burn time.

On your first burn we recommend burning our Medium sized jars for around 1 hour. However, this may vary. It is crucial on the first burn that the wax pools evenly to the edge of your jar. Once it has reached the edge and a pool has started to form you are welcome to extinguish the candle and your candle will now burn beautifully every time.

Vegan candle care and safety.

  • Trim your wick to 3mm before each burn. This ensures the wax will melt evenly, reduce the risk of a fire, the jar overheating (and potentially exploding if not trimmed down at all) and also improves scent throw.

  • Remove any debris or ‘soot gremlins’ off the tip of the wick. The carbon produced from the wicks can cause these to form which, if not removed, the wick will burn too hot – risking a fire. These soot particles can sometimes fall into the wax pool too so be sure to check this before each burn and remove any debris from the wax pool.

  • OTC vegan candles come complete with a metal safety cut off at the end of our wicks – Leaving around 2mm of wax at the bottom of the jar, designed for your own safety and to prevent the jars from overheating. The large candles have much larger wicks which burn a lot hotter so for your own safety we recommend leaving around 2cm of wax in the bottom of the jar.

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended, and away from children and pets.

  • Do not burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time, this can cause the jar to overheat.

  • The jar can be hot to the touch, therefore do not attempt to move your candle when burning

  • Keep your candle on a flat, heatproof surface and do not move it.

  • DO NOT use your candle as a night light or leave burning when you sleep, this is extremely dangerous.

When to trim your wick.

  • If it is curling when burning.

  • It is forming ‘soot gremlins’

  • Is smoking.

  • The flame is growing too high and flickering excessively.
